Compassion

Compassion lies at the core of the Gospel message. Jesus, our ultimate example, demonstrated unparalleled compassion towards the lost and the marginalized. In Matthew 9:36, we read, “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Compassion is the fuel that ignites our desire to reach out to the unreached, extending a helping hand to those who are in need. It enables us to see people through God’s eyes and empathize with their struggles, ultimately leading us to take action.

Competence

While compassion opens our hearts to the needs of others, competence equips us to effectively address those needs. Competence refers to the skills, knowledge, and expertise required to fulfill the Great Commission. In 2 Timothy 2:15, Paul encourages Timothy to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” As missionaries, we must diligently study the Word of God, gaining a deep understanding of its principles and teachings. Additionally, acquiring cross-cultural and language skills enables us to communicate the message of Christ effectively, breaking down barriers and fostering understanding.

Capability

While competence focuses on the individual, capability emphasizes the collective strength of the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Paul highlights the diversity of spiritual gifts among believers, stating, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them…There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone, it is the same God at work.” Recognizing and harnessing the unique gifts and talents within the missions organization enhances our capability to bring about Kingdom breakthroughs. Embracing collaboration, unity, and shared vision enables us to maximize our impact and reach.

Courage

Engaging with unreached people groups and the unsaved requires courage, as we step out of our comfort zones and into unknown territories. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” The call to missions often involves facing opposition, cultural barriers, and personal challenges. However, through reliance on God’s strength and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome fear and boldly proclaim the Gospel, knowing that God is with us.

Character

Finally, character plays a pivotal role in seeing lasting Kingdom breakthroughs. Our character reflects our integrity, authenticity, and Christlikeness. In Galatians 5:22-23, the apostle Paul highlights the fruit of the Spirit, which includes attributes such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. As we interact with unreached people groups, our character must shine forth, testifying to the transforming power of Christ within us. It is through our Christlike character that we exemplify the love and grace of God, drawing others to the message we proclaim.

A person of character exhibits humility, transparency, and a servant’s heart. They prioritize the needs of others above their own and demonstrate genuine care and respect for those they serve. This authentic display of Christ’s love builds trust and credibility, breaking down barriers of skepticism and resistance. Our character should align with the message we carry, making it attractive and compelling to those who have yet to encounter the saving grace of Jesus.
