Managing Stress and Burnout in Ministry: Finding Strength in Weakness

Situations will expose our weaknesses, and we will face insults, abuse, hardships, and many difficult situations in our ministry, that no human strength can handle. Yet, this can be an avenue for God to provide us with strength.

Finding strength in weakness is a fundamental requirement for any minister of the gospel to have an effective and lasting walk with the Lord. Ministers are held to an incredibly high standard of near perfection, making it risky to hide their weaknesses instead of finding strength in them. The issue is not weakness itself, but the failure to find strength in it or see it as a source of divine strength. As stated in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” God, who is perfect in every way, is ready to compensate for our weaknesses if we sincerely allow Him.

We can find ultimate strength in our weaknesses by allowing Him and opening up to Him completely. His grace can perfect our weaknesses, enabling us to achieve extraordinary things beyond our capabilities. Therefore, let us take delight in our weaknesses, in insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties. When we are weak, His strength can make us strong.

Situations will expose our weaknesses, and we will face insults, abuse, hardships, and many difficult situations in our ministry, that no human strength can handle. Yet, this can be an avenue for God to provide us with strength. Although it might be tough during such seasons, we can always trust God to strengthen us, as He is always in the business of turning weakness into strength.

Biblical Examples of Strength in Weakness

I would like to draw our attention to a few examples in the scripture where God turned people’s weaknesses into strengths. In addition to Paul’s story in 2 Corinthians 12, we have Moses in Exodus 6:30, where God appointed him to speak to Pharaoh in Egypt. The Bible records that Moses spoke with faltering lips, yet God used him. Look at the early disciples. Many of them were not learned, but God used them effectively to propagate the gospel.

How to Find Strength in Weakness

You may ask, “How can I find strength in weakness?” This is possible by totally depending on God (100% dependency). As stated in John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.” The minister’s source of strength is his/her union with Christ. The minister must have uninterrupted fellowship with the Lord. This is the only way our weaknesses will not be exposed. We must prioritize walking with God over ministerial engagements driven by human ideas. We must never be carried away by ministry activities to the detriment of our devotion to fellowship with the Lord.

Ministry work can be stressful beyond limits, taking a toll on one’s physical and emotional state. However, we must never allow it to affect our fellowship with the Lord in the secret place of the Most High. Like our Lord, we must develop the habit of taking time out of our busy schedules to be in solitary confinement with our Father. This is where real strength is found.

The more intimately we walk with God in fellowship, the stronger we become. I want to submit that the level of our relationship and fellowship with God must exceed our ministry assignments; otherwise, we risk stress and burnout. Ministry tends to be stressful if our access to the source of real strength is hindered.

Managing Stress and Burnout in Ministry

The signs and symptoms of stress and burnout in ministry include insufficient sleep and rest, spiritual dryness, depression, loss of motivation for ministry, feelings of isolation, susceptibility to temptation, suicidal thoughts, disengagement, and a lack of love for those you serve.

As a minister, if you experience any of these symptoms, then examine your intimacy with our Father in Heaven. At such moments, prioritize your devotion to God. Knock more on God’s door than before. Take a break from your busy schedule to retreat at the foot of the cross. The presence of God cannot harbour stress, and it is the only place we can gather sufficient wood to sustain our fire so that we will not burn out. We must acknowledge that we are still in the body and cannot be everywhere at the same time. No matter how zealous we are, there is a limit to what human capacity can achieve, but with God, we can do exceedingly great things without being stressed.

Smooth and cordial fellowship with our family is another ‘anti-stress’ measure. It is advisable to develop a bond and maintain an open fellowship with your spouse and other brethren. This will eliminate and prevent any secret sin that can strain our relationship with God. “A three-fold cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12b). Sharing responsibly with your spouse, as a divine helpmate is essential, making the work more enjoyable and less stressful.

Do not abandon the fellowship of the brethren (Hebrews 10:25), because “It is sweet and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1). Avoid isolation, seek partnership with other brethren, learn to delegate whenever possible, and seek help from other brethren when needed. No one is perfect on his/her own.

Conclusion

Embracing our weaknesses and relying on God’s strength is pivotal for a thriving ministry. By deepening our fellowship with the Lord, prioritizing our spiritual well-being, and maintaining supportive relationships, we can overcome the challenges of ministry and prevent burnout. Remember, God’s power is made perfect in our weaknesses. As we navigate the demands of ministry, let us continually seek His strength, trusting that He will equip us to accomplish extraordinary things beyond our human capabilities.
